..... I met Douglas Adams.
I was a features photographer for The Evening Standard. It was for an "at home with ...." section. I loved the Hitchhiker books and used to drive past a real estate agent called "Hotblack Desiato" so I knew he had to live around there. I mentioned it to Maggie, my editor, and she tracked him down.
I spent a very nice afternoon with My. Adams at his home in Islington, North London. I wish I still had those pix.

Wed, November 8, 2006 - 7:22 AMAnd was he witty? I have this secret fear that all my favourite humorous authors are dull as dishwater in real life. -

Wed, November 8, 2006 - 7:53 AMNot at all. One thing I do remember was how he was the first person I knew to use an Apple computer. I have not looked back since. -

Not at all like dishwater, I'm guessing.

Re: Many years ago ....
Wed, November 8, 2006 - 9:54 AMI remember speaking to him briefly during his "Last Chance to See" book tour.
Beyond fumbling and sounding like a complete moron (I was a wee kid), I must credit Douglas for also instilling much of my conservationism and awe and wonder for the natural world around us... without having to call to a higher authority.
Everything around is so amazing and special enough not to need false ideas of how the world works... and what's more, we need to save it so that we can appreciate it longer.
Funny that he preceded EO Wilson's new book by about 15 years.
YAY DOUGLAS!
