Again, in the books, when Arthur returns "home," and he takes the Babelfish out of his ear, he puts it in the bowl the dolphins have left for him. In the beginning, it is stated the fish feeds on brainwave energies and outputs a translation. What the heck in the fish feeding on when Arthur puts it in the bowl?
