Fri, April 22, 2005 - 6:45 PMAnyone who names his cat Nyssa is okay by me. Sure, he'd be a total geek to do that, but that's okay by me.
My only qualms with your article were a) I object to anyone recommending Starship Troopers to anyone at any time in any context, and b) had there been space, it would have been nice to acknowledge that SF and humor have also been paired on the small screen, for instance Futurama and a long-ago series called Quark, written by Buck Henry, and doing for SF what he did for spy films in Get Smart. Oh, and c) what about Buckaroo Banzai?
Otherwise, a fine list and I was especially glad to see some often overlooked personal favorites there, including Sleeper, Free Enterprise, and Brother from Another Planet. Well done! -

Sat, April 23, 2005 - 7:21 AMTotal geek? Guilty.
At least I don't have to explain her name like I do most folks.. "Uh, well, she sacrificed herself to stay with the lepers at Terminus? Never mind."
Space WAS a problem. They only gave me 1400 words. I went a couple hundred over as it was.
I love Futurama, but have you actually rewatched Quark recently? Oh man, it's bad. Loved it as a kid, but boy does it stink. -

Re: all of a sudden!!!!
Mon, April 25, 2005 - 5:18 PMVery nice piece!
I have to agree with your assesment of Starship Troopers btw.
I always enjoyed the underlying message of nationalism and the fervent patriotism being exploited. I also like how it has a kind of 50's newsreel fel to it in places...
also, Flash Gordon... one of my favs... -
