  • If you read the list of things that he complains did not make it into the film suddenly the review is not quite so threatening. When I went the re-read the review, I could only hear The Simpson's Comic Book Guy's voice reading it in his outraged tone

I'm sure people were just as angry when they found out that the Shoe Store subplot from the Radio scripts didn't make it into the BBC TV series and so on...

    • I don't think the list of things that aren't in the film is the point of the review at all. This isn't a case of someone saying -- to paraphrase a comment I read on Slashdot -- "How dare they cut Tom Bombadil? This so-called Lord of the Rings is a worthless hack job and I'll never watch it!" That attitude is just ridiculous at any time, but would be especially silly in this case. The reviewer makes it clear he understands that every iteration of H2G2 has been different from every other version.

The long version of the review does specify a number of changes in dialogue, but to make a more damning point: in each case, something that was funny previously has been changed in such a way as to make it not funny. And that's really bad. H2G2 isn't strong on plot in any version; that's part of the point. It's always been very strong on delicately constructed verbal humor. Just slashing chunks of verbiage out of it clearly won't work.

I can see all too easily how the filmmakers could be sincere fans and have every good intention, but simply not understand why some things are funny and why some things aren't. I'm not going to say that's definitely the case here without seeing the movie for myself...but the complaints this guy makes do sound valid.
      • WARNING....Minor Spoilers!!!

The reviewer knows his stuff, and he does bring up some plot holes that really need to be plugged, but I lost a lot of respect for his opionion when he threw out this gem in the review...

"In other words, from the audience’s point of view, it matters not a jot whether Douglas Adams wrote any particular part of this movie; it only matters that it should sound like he wrote it."

I'm impressed by his stones, but it is utter and complete hubris to state that, I know what's funny about HHG2TG better than Douglas Adams does...

and unfortunatly, that's how the review reads...He seems to view the whole of Hitchhikers as a collection of Jokes and Good Bits. Yes, I miss some of these lines, but a lot of these jokes and scenes were built to fit the episodic nature of hitchhikers. They survived into the book because you had plenty of space to keep these scenes.

I haven't seen the film like the reviewer did, so the following paragraph is pure conjecture on my part...meaning I'm pulling it right out of my ass. That said, I think there was a reason why a lot of these scenes were dropped or streamlined. In it's translation to a 2 hour movie, it is neccisary for each scene to flow into one another, and the momentum of the film kept moving. These minor scenes, although humourous, would make the film seem "sketch-y" to make up a word. The plot would move forward, get distracted while the guide tells you about this really funny bit of galactic history, or the charactors have this funny conversation with a minor character. Although they would be funny, it would make the story seem "jerky." You can see this in the David Lynch version of Dune, which tries to cram in all the wonderful rich details about the world, but invariably distract from the main plot.

Don't get me wrong...I agree that some of the scenes could have been included without distracting the main plot, but I understand why they did it, The reviewer seems to be moraly outraged that they did not include all the bits that HE found important...I'd have loved to have seen Prosser in the mud also, but when you get down to it, getting Arthur and Ford onto the Heart of Gold to meet the other charactors is more important than exploring why Prossor wears a little fur cap.

I guess the thing that really horks my chain about the review is the underlying snarky tone, and utter and complete dismissing of any new parts of the script. To the reviewer...it's imperative that Ford turn into a penguin on the Heart of Gold. The fact that they decided to have them change into a Sofa is utterly and completely unfunny and a slap in the face of the whole of HHG2TG's Fandom.

He boasts he is a "dangerous maverick, or a grumpy old git, but maybe I’m the only one who can spot the Emperor’s new clothes for what they are" but he seems to be taking a sadistic amount of pleasure in ripping this movie to shreds, almost as if he was punishing not only the filmakers, but Douglas Adams himself in daring to think that they can craft their own vision of HHG2TG that is different from his familiar biblical cannon that only he has dissected, deconstructed, analyzed, and explained.

Ultimately, he shows himself to be a fool, because any reasonable thinking person knows that *I* am the end all/be all of HHG2TG appreciation.
        • i'm not looking!

so just for my own sake, i am not reading this review or even the review of the review!
the only way i am going to let this movie be ruined, is to watch it myself and form an opinion!

ok - i know it is odd replying to a thread that i am not going to read much of, but i wanted to anyhow!

not that any of you needed to know any of that.

(ps - no matter how much this movie may blow, i bet it will still be better than the new Star Wars...)
        • well put, and well formed. I think that yes, moving to a new medium always forces changes.

I for one am kind of happy to see such a terrible review. Every time my preconceived notions of what a movie will be in terms of quality are set low based upon reviews like this, I end up being able to enjoy the movie more. In other words, the more people tell me it's bad, the more I'm not worried about how good it should be, because I think it should be based upon what I know of it as a book, or a short story or a radio show.

Maybe that doesn't make sense, but for me, I'm relieved of quite a bit of tension for the next couple of weeks.

Oh, btw, I'll be in Tampa Bay for the opening weekend, if anyone is down there and wants to see it... where's a good theatre?? heheh
