53 More Things To Do In Zero Gravity

Hello all, do you have your towels? Did anyone see Thor's hammer? Is it really like a playful puppy? I thought I would start a Douglas Adams tribe too and for some reason didn't notice this one was here. So, I scrapped it (at least abandoned it) to come to the original. Don't wanna be that guy, ya know? So I was thinking, if there was a book called 53 More Things To Do In Zero Gravity, what do you think those things would be? In case anyone is wondering, in the actual book the Hitchhiker's Guide, it refers to itself as having been more successful than any of the other books to have been released by the publishing corporations of Ursa Minor. It also did better than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus and Oolon Coluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters: Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes, and Who Is This God Person Anyway? Thanks you and sorry for the inconvenience.

DON'T PANIC!!
This will only take a few minutes!
Please help a struggling broadcast/film student win a laptop from Apple!!! Instructions from my Producer follow..... Thank you all, and the first round of Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters are on me if I win!!!
THANKS HITCHHIKERS!!

Hello you guys!

I have been promoting our film madly - I've created
fliers to post, little 'cards' to hand out to people,
and I've sent out batches of emails in groups (I still
have lots more to send out!).

The only way we are going to win is if we ALL promote
like MAD! Below I have copied the email I sent out to
the Whaddya group - use it or change it to suit your
needs. I've attached the flier and 'cards' - you can
change them or use them as is. Please tell EVERYONE
YOU KNOW! Make sure they rate it!!! There are many
problems with the mac site - the main ones that affect
us are
1. You can't search by our movie name - it doesn't
work.
2. Using the email to a friend function on our page
sends a link that doesn't work (or it didn't last time
I checked).
3. The only thing that seems to work is searching by
our team name -
whaddyagonnadoaboutit

Thanks!

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? team entered the
Insomnia Film Festival
Turn 24 hours into a
3-minute masterpiece

The list of elements were given out at 9am EST on
October 13th, we shot at 3 locations, our visual
effects master Andrew Coggeshall was importing and
working while we set up for the next shots. I was
importing footage into Final Cut by 6pm. By 2am I had
picture-lock and I handed off to John Madden for
scoring. Dana Jae proved to be the marathan champion
by mixing and compressing at the wee hours of the
morning to get it uploaded by 9am EST on October 14th.

It was a fantastic learning experience - and we ended
up with a pretty cool little movie. AND WE NEED YOUR
HELP TO WIN!!! There were 3000 entries this year, so
competition will be tough. You can help by watching
and rating movies - the 25 entries with the highest
rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be
screened by industry professionals, including Barry
Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron. The
biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each
member of the team will receive a MacBook Pro with
Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake! THIS
PRIZE WILL HELP US MAKE MORE MOVIES!

So... I encourage you to check it out! Please tell
all of your friends & family, too! You have to create
a Mac ID - if you have ever ordered from Mac or
iTunes, you already have one. You will also need
Quicktime Player - available for free download at Mac.

Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions presents...
8 3/4
Please watch and rate it by going to
http://edcommunity. apple.com/ insomnia_ fall07/
in the search field enter our team name:
whaddyagonnadoaboutit
8 and 3/4 will come up, click to watch

I would love to hear your comments! Thanks!

Intelligent Design vs. Babel Fish Theory

I am still a bit flabbergasted that we are actually debating creationism again in the public school system. Is this 1920? Intelligent Design proponents cite the vast complexity of life on Earth as evidence of the hand of God. To me this is highly contradictory. I am reminded of the wisdom of Douglas Adams regarding his Babel Fish.

I paraphrase:

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly complex could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes like this:

"I refuse to prove that I exist", says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."

"But", says Man, "Intelligent Design is a dead giveaway isn't it? Life is far to complex to have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."

"Oh dear", says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

"Oh that was easy" says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

You know when they walk in to Hama Nagula's hall... where the service is.... they past a staircase with a golden 5 ft nose. It is a 3d mapped computer rendition prop of the precise dimensions of douglas' nose.

seriously.

I love commentary from people.... It is Martin, the guy who played Slotibotfast, and the director, I think.

fun times. There is a lot of GREAT fun info...

like zooey / trillian made up the phrase "buttons aren't toys" which I think is one of the funniest lines in the movie!

..... I met Douglas Adams.

I was a features photographer for The Evening Standard. It was for an "at home with ...." section. I loved the Hitchhiker books and used to drive past a real estate agent called "Hotblack Desiato" so I knew he had to live around there. I mentioned it to Maggie, my editor, and she tracked him down.

I spent a very nice afternoon with My. Adams at his home in Islington, North London. I wish I still had those pix.

I don't see any Dirk Gently discussion here, so I'll start one. These are some of my favorite books, ever. And I read so much it's unhealthy. I liked the first one a little bit more than the second, but they're both great, and so is the fragment of the third. That would have been a really funny book. When I finished it I had a lot of fun just imagining the possibilites.

I read a late interview with DA and he claimed "Last chance to see" was the book he was most proud of. Thoroughly recomend it.

Co-written with some naturalist about fairly well known critters that sadly might be on their last legs.

So it looks like the DVD is coming out next week... I am assuming it is of the movie that was just out. Anyone know anything about it? Any "extras" that might make it worth it? I am kinda torn, thought about getting just because, but then again it is so different than the original 6 episodes...

Just thinking...

Oh boy. It's quite a mess. It's oddly stilted and mostly unfunny. The packed pre-screening crowd started excited and quickly became silent for most of the film. It's ALMOST worth seeing for the terrific last half hour, however which seems to be the sole thing the filmmakers were enthused about.
There are a number of in-jokes for fans who are exactly the people that will hate it most.

In the beginning, it is stated the fish feeds on brainwave energies and outputs a translation. What the heck in the fish feeding on when Arthur puts it in the bowl?

Air Guppy vivisection

The whole problem began when there occured chronic intermittened freezing of a cellular dried good. This had an effect not unlike a vivisection of a Cultaneous air guppy.
The air guppy population on cultaneous IV has risen through astrononomical levels. To such a point, that the atmosphere became more guppy than air. due to spontaneous mating from constant collisions in the atmosphere. Over the years, seen from space, the atmosphere had attained a slight orange hue-- the small sun reflecting off of the golden skins of billions of the air-borne fish. The peoples of CultaneousIV had to wear guppy filter masks to breathe properly.
After many years of this ,and a myriad of other annoying factors, the peoples decided something must be done -and rather quickly.
After several meetings and rantings , barbeques, and lots of golden sushi, the peoples proposed a mass vivisection to curb the rediculous guppy population to a more modestly livable level.
Since nothing of the sort had been done before, no one could have forseen the drastic consequences of such an operation.
Apparently, by some awkwardly random bit of biological design, the air gupies of CultaneousIV have ,what was later dubbed, A Random Discoloration-Cumbustion Trigger. An internal, biological effect consisting of tiny effects happening, domino-like , that can only be sparked by a vivisection operation-wherein, within 24 hours(or 16,as the local Cultaneous days would have it) , the gupie's insides quickly exchange places with the outside, and with rather hideous force. Before which ,the guppies insides go through a chemical reaction that causes a completely random color shifting on the scale of a roulette wheel. So,ipso-facto, when the guppy ,to be blunt, explodes, The insides can be any color possible(and some not possible). This, as you can probaly deduce by now,led to an extrremely multicolorfully pacthed CultaneousIV. After which, the peoples became lovers of moving folk music, natural crafts, and lage gatherings around fires ,and mad dancing under the triple full moons, under a decidedly less guppy filled sky.
This was not the simularity in question of the effects of the intermittent freezing of a cellular dried good. Nor was the colorfull guppy explosions. The similarity lies in the vivisection operation itself, which ,being very tricky, involves (amoung many other things) a cellular breakdown utilizing bakinngsoda and vinegar.
I suppose that it could have been said that the intermittent frezing of a cellular dried good had an effect somewhat like mixing baking soda and vinegar, but we wouldn't of had our lovely journey through unfortunate biological dynamics of certain Cultaneous IV fauna. And what fun is a journey with out taking a side road once in a whilr to look at the peacocks,or smell the pancakes ,or what have you?.

I am reading many reviews of the film, and it speaks of not being entirely faithful to the book but that the driving spirit is defintiely Adamsesque... Adamsian.... Adamsanian....

aannnyyywho... I just wanted to see what your thoughts were on what is needed in the transition from book to film? How much of the book MUST there be and where is the filmmaker allowed to work in their medium to create a better finished work?

P.S. anyone seen any good bootlegs?

So Tomorrow night, I'm seeing it. I am planning on the Century 20 in Daly City (9:30pm is in DLP, 9:00pm regular) If people want to get a group gathering cool, if not, you're a smeghead. I can also do the AMC downtown if more people want to do that. I am really debating if I want to see it in DLP though.

Also there's a midnight showing tonight if anyone is interested...

The coming issue of Wired Magazine with the lame George Lucas cover - not sure why most people don't realize that the best thing about Star Wars was what they made up in their minds between seeing it as kids and getting old and suffering their mid-life sci-fi crisis... but I digress.

H2G2 Soundtrack

I just bought the newly-released 'Hitchhiker's Guide' movie soundtrack on i-tunes. It's the first music I've ever downloaded from any source anywhere ever... The whole album was available for just $9.99

My gods it's... it's beautiful...

The banjo-riddled 'Journey of the Sourcerer' theme from the TV and radio show? It's in there, complete with corny circa 1981 synthesizers that continue to sprinkle themselves around the movie's score... And does anyone remember the depeche mode-sounding songs that were sung by the original Marvin the Paranoid Android back in 1982? The song 'Reasons to be Miserable' is on the new soundtrack, too... but sung by Stephen Frye and all EBM'd up... If a DJ doesn't jump on that and start spinning it soon I'm gonna be ticked.

And we can't forget the broadway-style opening number 'So Long and Thanks for All the Fish', sung as the Dolphins flee the planet:

"The world is going to be destroyed!
No point in getting all annoyed
Sit back and let it all dissolve!"

Or the jaunty 'skipping-through-the-meadows' sounding song that plays as the Vogon reads his poetry to Arthur and Ford...

This is going to be the coolest movie ever made.

Ok, so there I was watching a movie on the big screen (not my house, a bigger one at the theatre) and they showed the latest trailer for the Guide. I finally saw Phil and then his head flip up. I thought it was quite interesting that they portrayed Zhapod in this way. The head flipping up was interesting, it seems almost as if rather than a second persona it is just an “alternate” head for him, maybe he changes from Zhapod to Phil at will? Then the third arm kinda just appeared from nowhere as if he did not have it. I am really curious to see how they are going to play this off. The movie definitely looks good, very “action-y” The frog fly-swatter things seemed terribly funny. Marvin, well he took a bit of growing on for me through all the trailers. I guess he’s ok, just a bit small. I got used to the big Marvin from the BBC. (Speaking of, KTEH (SF Bay area) is airing Hitchhikers, I guess as a lead up to the movie. Sunday nights at 10:30 after Red Dwarf).

Well till the movie… Hey I don’t know if a group of ya’ll want to get together for the flick, for those of ya’ll that are around San Francisco maybe we could meet up for the movie on the 29th? We could grab a bite at Milliway’s after :)

HGTG Billboard Adverts

I just posted a couple of snaps of the billboard pretty much in Hollywood central.

I feel like such a Negative Nellie - which I'm not because I've been looking forward to a film with the proper budget behind it for a long time. I actually got excited when I noticed the title appearing on a few writer's paperwork a couple of years ago at my place of employment... But this is neither here not there.

Um, the billboard. I noticed it zipping down Highland (Laurel Cyn. is a nightmare right now because of the rain) and as I drove by and had a good look at it I thought about it and it left me wanting.

Maybe a thumb? Maybe a GIANT "DON'T PANIC!"... Dunno - Seems that whomever's in charge of the billboard PR isn't exactly a fan or has a sense of humour worthy of the privilege. Seems that the billboard is an afterthought slapped together - Why bother? Save some money and make 100,000 DON'T PANIC! buttons (remember those that came with the PC game?) and spread them out for people to wear. I've thought of wearing mine lots since the new millennium began and I will if I can only find where I put it.

I'm still looking forward to seeing the movie. Some of the actors I've actually like in other films.

I saw this DVD set at Best Buy of the original series and was wondering if any one out there has this set? (I think it is 2 DVD's maybe?) I keep thinking it's the same as the series I have seen on PBS, the first 6 episodes. I only ask because I once read this thing from Douglass Adams about how there were these productions of like 12 episodes and the first 6 were the original story but...

Anyway, if you know anything about this set at the store I would like to hear about it.

Thanks,

I just found a biography of the grand master at a fabulous bookstore in Berkley over the weekend.

Written by M.J. Simpson, "Hitchiker: A Biography of Douglas Adams" has a foreword by Neil Gaiman, and a wonderful picture of our man on the cover. Look for it, and I will let you know how it reads in a later post.

Also, there are new behind the scenes photos of the movie on the site.

So I was poking around and found some things about the movie... thanks to a previous posting. But does anybody have any information about John Malkovich's character, Humma, that was created by our Lord Douglas especially for a movie rendition of the books? I am curious what/who this character is, and what role he plays in Arthur's travels.

If you know, enlighten me please.

Also, does anyone subscribe to the ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha newsletter? Is it worth it?

Hi all - just arrived on this planet. Here's something that's been bothering me all these years. For a time I played the text-only Hitchhiker's game (and this was on a 5.5" floppy disk and a Compaq "luggable" computer). And I never could get passed the door that was depressed so it wouldn't open. Does anyone know how this problem was solved? As I remember all my attempts to cheer that door up or give it something it wanted failed! Needless to say this was not very recently. But I still want to know!

I'm beginning to wonder if bookmarks, like ballpoint pens, have their own planet somewhere. I *know* I've bought more than I can find in my house! The one I bought this June has vanished like a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster down a thristy hichhicker's throat.

I was recently invited here by Sandy, who, being the Goddess of Book-Gifts that she is, just gave me a hardbound copy of all 6 _Hitchhiker_ books. *Waving a towel in honor of this great
gift!*
I was thinking today that the actor who played Izzy in "The Mummy Returns" would be great to play Ford.
Off to sip Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters,
Aleera

I searched for you guys... I knew you would be here somewhere. I looked under Hitchikersguide.tribe.net... no luck... 42.tribe.net, and I have no idea what is going on there... and a couple of other places. I began to panic, and I thought, Don't Panic... GENIUS!!!

So, hi. I am a huge Douglas Adams dork... and I am so happy to be among friends.

Here is my question for you. Have you all read 'Last Chance to See'? It is wonderful, and really allows the reader some clarity within the mind of our dearly departed.

I didn't even realize how much it's become part of my psyche. "A bunch of mindless jerks who'll be first against the wall when the revolution comes." Definitely a favorite line of mine, and part of my everyday usage, but I'd fogotten the source.

I heard a rumor from a number of sources (none of them terribly reliable, which in fact would qualify them as excellent candidates as editors for the HHG, but I digress) that there was a movie deal in the making around the death of Douglas Adams. Anyone else hear about this?

End of the universe, where?

If you were to be anywhere in this world/universe... to sit back and watch the end of it all... where would you be?

Don't feel restricted to answer 'the restaurant', this is meant to be a ice-breaker get to know the tribe question.

My answer: probably the place i'm sitting right now, my favorite local coffeeshop and second home. Every major event that could be construed as "end-of-the-universe-esque" has transpired while i was here, or i became aware of it here.

H2G2 Website

I'm sure I'm not telling any of you something you don't already know about but, for a good time, why not visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/ the site started by the man without whom we would not be here right now, the man I most aspire to be like (as long as I can still be a woman), Douglas A. Adams.

Okay, I'll admit it, it's not quite as fun as tribe.net and a bit more difficult to navigate and the people aren't nearly as friendly, but I have to tell you that I was just as excited the day I found it as I became when I stumbled across tribe.

If you feel like it, please do visit my page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/U232980 and let me know you've stopped by. Perhaps that will give me a bit of incentive to update it. So far, it seems to be sorely neglected by other human beings.
